Camper's Handbook
Since 1966, Kansas
City’s kids have had the opportunity to experience a fine arts education
and have fun at the same time. As a fine and performing arts camp, Camellot
gives children the chance to polish their performance skills while developing
self-confidence and self-esteem.
This handbook will
help you understand what Camellot is all about, from the first day to
the final curtain six weeks later. Refer to it often and if you have a
question you may always feel free to call us at 816-229-7096 before camp
begins on June 2, 2008 or at Rockhurst High School after that date.
Registration
If your child is registered for camp and you have paid your $100 deposit,
you will have received this handbook in the mail. Please note that the
remainder of your tuition is due on the first day of camp or before.
Campers should arrive by 9
a.m. on the first day of camp. They will bring with them their parents and their checkbooks in hand, to pay the balance of their tuition. To avoid a long
wait in line, send your check in before the first day. All payments made
on the first day of camp should be given only to the office manager, Susan Meier, or Vida Bikales, President of the Board of Directors.. Because of the excitement of the first day, it is important
that any tuition be given to Susan only. Please do not give your check
to any other faculty member.
An additional important note
regarding registration: please be sure you have filled out your child’s
enrollment form completely. Medical information and telephone numbers
are a necessity in case of an emergency. If that information is not on
file as of the first day of camp, please call or come to the office to
complete it.
Place and
Time
The
morning session of Camellot is 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Afternoon camp is 1-3 p.m. Camp is conducted
every day at Rockhurst High School, 9301 State Line, Kansas City, MO 64114.
The Camellot season runs six weeks, starting on Monday, June 2 and ends
Saturday night July 12..
First Day
of Camp
The first day
of camp is different from the others and is different for each division.
On the first day, campers spend their time getting to know each other,
their teachers and the class options available to them. Here is how the
first day will look for each division:
Junior Division
Junior
Division campers (age 5 through 3rd grade), arrive at 9 a.m. the first
day. They will rotate through all of their classes: art, drama, vocal
music, dance and chorus. The Junior Division newsletter, Junior Jots,
will be sent home each Monday. The newsletter will keep you up-to-date
on weekly activities and important camp information.
Parents are welcome to stay.
Senior Division
Senior
campers (4th through 9th grades) arrive and are greeted by faculty at
9 a.m. A tour of classrooms and important areas is next. Senior campers then have the
opportunity to sample three out of five classes available to them so they
can choose their class schedule wisely. All campers are a part of the
Camellot chorus. At the end of the first morning, campers will decide
which classes they want to take. Enrollment forms will be distributed
and campers will select their schedule. All Senior Division faculty will
be on hand to help campers. Schedules will be distributed the next morning
at 9:30 following chorus.
Afternoon
Camp
Afternoon
camp is from 1-3 p.m. each day. Campers will participate in activities
centered around weekly themes and performance. Afternoon campers also
participate in a community service project.
Daily Drop-Off
and Pick-Up
Please drop
off your child at the Commons door on the north side of the building each
morning. Junior campers will be greeted by their class assistants or faculty.
When picking your child up early, please tell the office manager that
morning and we’ll be sure to have your child ready to go at the
appointed time.
Because Camellot staff members
have other commitments, it is not convenient for them to remain beyond
the close of camp, therefore we will charge $5 per every five minutes
past 3:15 p.m. Charges will be collected when you pick up your camper
and should be given to the faculty member on late duty.
Guest Policy
Campers may bring guests to classes given the following guidelines:
1. The camp office must approve
the visit at least one day in advance.
2. Campers are responsible for making sure their guests have lunch if
there all day.
3. Campers may not bring guests during the first or last weeks of camp.
4. Dependent on activities and supplies, it may not always be possible
for a guest to visit.
5. A guest must behave in accordance with all camp rules.
6. The same child may not be a guest at camp more than once.
Showcase
At 7:30 p.m.
each Thursday evening, Junior and Senior Division campers perform in The Rose Theatre
at Rockhurst High School. Showcases are an informal demonstration of what
the campers have been working on during the week. Campers will wear their
Camellot T-shirt, white shorts and white tennis shoes for Showcase. The Camellot Chorus will
perform at every Showcase. There are no tickets and no charge for Showcases.
Junior Division
Performances
The
Junior Division performs twice during the camp season. They will have
their own show on Thursday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m. before the Showcase.
They will also perform with the Seniors in our production of Peter Pan on Friday and Saturday, July 11 and 12.
Musical
As
our season finale, the entire camp will present Peter Pan in The Rose Theatre at Rockhurst at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday,
July 11 and 12. Senior Division campers are encouraged to audition for
lead roles. Auditions are the second Tuesday of camp. During the morning
session, drama auditions are conducted during regularly scheduled drama
classes. Vocal music auditions are in the afternoon from 1-3 p.m. Campers
are informed that evening by phone if they have received a lead role.
Campers will lead roles should plan to rehearse each camp day from 1-3
p.m. Some campers will have smaller roles and will only be needed at some
rehearsals. A complete schedule will be sent home the day after auditions.
T-shirts
The official Camellot T-shirt is included in the price of your
child’s tuition. Campers wear their T-shirts with
white shorts and white tennis shoes for all Thursday evening Showcases.
Morning Break
Camellot provides
all campers with a mid-morning snack of cookies and a drink. If your child
has special dietary needs, please let Trinda Crow or Marsha Oyer know
in writing prior to or on the first day of camp.
Lunch
Afternoon campers
and Senior campers in rehearsal will need to bring a sack lunch and drink.
Lunches will be stored in coolers until lunch.
Dress Guidelines
Campers should
come in comfortable, casual clothes. Many activities take place on the
floor. Dresses and skirts are discouraged. Revealing short-shorts as well
as bare midriffs will not be allowed. All camp classrooms are air-conditioned.
For safety and health reasons, no bare feet will be allowed. Tennis shoes
are ideal.
Health Care
All
medication will be held and dispensed by camp staff. All medication must
be brought to camp in prescription bottles detailing the proper dosage.
A note indicating dosage and granting permission for dispensing must be
kept on file in the office, signed by the parent or guardian. First aid
and sanitary supplies are kept in the camp office.
Please inform Trinda Crow or
Marsha Oyer of any health conditions that may affect your child’s
enjoyment and productivity at camp. The health information you share with
your school should be shared with camp staff. Examples would be allergies,
learning disabilities, physical disabilities and social or emotional difficulties.
A medical consent form must be on file for each child by the first day
of camp.
Lost and Found
A lost
and found box will be kept in the camp office. Anything not claimed by
the end of camp will be donated to charity. To avoid lost items, please
mark campers’ possessions with their name. Campers should not bring
toys, purses, etc. to camp. Campers move from room-to-room only increasing
the chance of items being lost.
Fourth of
July
Camellot celebrates the Fourth of July with the day off. There will be camp the rest of the weel as well as a Showcase on July 3.
Costumes
All Junior campers will have simple costumes for their show the third week of camp.
Costumes are
required for both the Junior and Senior Divisions for Peter Pan. Costume information will be sent home during the third week of camp as
well as posted on our web site. All costumes are designed with an eye
toward economy both in time and money. All costumes must be ready
for dress rehearsal, which is the Thursday morning of the last week of
camp. Lead role costumes must be ready for the first afternoon dress rehearsal.
That date will be included on the rehearsal schedule.
Parents have found it helpful
to talk to each other regarding certain wardrobe items or props. Feel
free to network and be creative!
For parents who have the time
to help others with their costumes, please leave your name in the Camellot
office.

Tickets for
Peter Pan are $10 each and are reserved seats. Following
is an outline of the ticket-buying procedure:
